Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday urged Aam Aadmi Party MLAs to speak according to their conscience while appearing before Sri Akal Takht Sahib in connection with the Bhagwant Mann video row.
Jakhar, who is in Delhi, said no party whip applies before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh faith.
In a message to AAP MLAs, Jakhar alleged that the party leadership had given them written instructions from Delhi on what to say and what not to say before Akal Takht.
He said the MLAs should remember that Akal Takht is not a legislative assembly where legislators are bound by a party whip. He urged them to speak honestly in the presence of the Guru.
Jakhar appealed to AAP legislators not to sacrifice their conscience for political benefits or in the hope of securing a party ticket in the next election.
He warned that if they failed at the Guru’s door, they would not find refuge anywhere.
Sikh MLAs from all political parties are appearing before Akal Takht today in connection with the Mann video controversy.
The development comes amid heightened political and religious debate in Punjab, where Akal Takht has summoned Sikh legislators and ministers to explain their stand on issues linked to the controversy.
