Senior Congress leaders remained absent as AICC general secretary in-charge Bhupesh Baghel began holding discussions with the heads of election committees at the Punjab Congress office in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
The meeting came amid ongoing infighting within the Punjab Congress following recent organizational changes in the state unit.
Several disgruntled leaders, who had held a separate meeting in Mohali on Monday, stayed away from Tuesday’s meeting.
Of the three working presidents of the Punjab Congress, Sukhwinder Singh Danny and former minister Raj Kumar Verka attended the meeting.
However, Sangat Singh Gilzian did not attend.
Baghel has stepped up efforts to pacify disgruntled leaders and bring unity within the state unit.
As part of these efforts, Raj Kumar Verka met former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Verka later met Bhupesh Baghel over breakfast before attending the meeting at the Punjab Congress office.
Punjab Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who has been taking a balanced stand amid the internal tensions, appealed for unity within the party.
Bajwa said the Congress is a democratic party with many experienced leaders.
He urged all leaders to remain united if they want to bring political change in Punjab.
The latest developments indicate that the Congress leadership is trying to manage internal resentment and project unity ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
