Three people were killed in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Monday after heavy rainfall triggered landslides, flooding, and road blockages in several areas.

Two persons died after a house was buried under debris following a landslide at Patan village in Maval tehsil.

Officials said three members of a family—Nandu Tikone, Mauli Tikone, and Anita Nandu Tikone—were trapped after the landslide struck the village in the early hours of Monday.

While police and the district administration said three persons were inside the house when the incident took place, the National Disaster Response Force said four to five people may have been trapped under the debris.

An NDRF official said the bodies of two persons had been recovered, while the search for other missing persons was continuing.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lonavala division, Gajanan Tompe said three landslides occurred in the remote village following heavy rainfall.

He said that in one incident, a house was buried after a portion of the Visapur fort slid down in the early hours of Monday.

Teams of the NDRF, police, and local rescue groups are carrying out the search and rescue operation.

In another incident, one person died after being swept away while riding a two-wheeler on a flooded road in Khed tehsil. Pune Collector Jitendra Dudi said the body had been recovered.

The district also witnessed severe waterlogging and road disruptions due to heavy rain.

An NDRF team rescued 37 passengers stranded in a private bus near Ghorawadi railway station in Maval tehsil after waterlogging in the area.

The collector said 23 revenue circles in Pune district recorded more than 65 mm of rainfall, while some places received over 200 mm of rain in the last 48 hours.

Dudi said landslides had occurred at several places due to heavy rainfall. Some roads were temporarily closed, while waterlogging created a mini-flood-like situation in certain areas.

He said coordinated efforts by the revenue, police, public works, and forest departments were underway to clear blocked roads and restore normal movement.

Several people stranded at different locations were rescued with the help of teams from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, NDRF, and the Army.

In Lonavala, a team from INS Shivaji assisted in rescue operations in the morning. People stranded at various locations were evacuated safely.

Some trains were also halted in the Lonavala area due to the weather conditions, and passengers were safely evacuated.

Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, schools across the Pune district remained closed on Monday.

The collector said a decision on whether schools would remain closed on Tuesday would be taken after reviewing the latest weather forecast.

Appealing to residents to remain cautious, Dudi said a red alert was in force for Monday and an orange alert had been issued for Tuesday.

He advised people to avoid unnecessary travel, take precautions, and cooperate with the administration.
