Pune realtor Ketan Agarwal’s death at Lohagad Fort was allegedly planned by his fiancee Siya Goyal and her lover Chetan Chaudhary, police said.
According to investigators, Siya Goyal allegedly gave a pre-decided signal before Chaudhary pushed Agarwal into a gorge on June 18. Police said the accused had planned the murder because they feared that eloping would bring disrepute to their families.
A police official involved in the investigation said both accused initially tried to blame each other. However, Siya later admitted that she had hatched the conspiracy and that Chetan was also involved in the planning.
Police said Chaudhary, 22, first claimed that he was present at Lohagad Fort but had not gone to the exact spot from where Agarwal was pushed. He also claimed that he did not know what had happened. Investigators, however, said his statement appeared false.
During questioning, both accused allegedly admitted their roles and explained the sequence of events. As per the plan, Siya, 20, was supposed to sit down as a signal. After that, Chaudhary was to come forward and push Agarwal off the cliff.
Police said Ketan Agarwal had no idea about the conspiracy and was pushed into the gorge before he could understand what was happening.
Investigators also questioned the accused on why they did not elope instead of killing Agarwal. According to police, they said eloping would have damaged the reputation of their families.
Police had earlier said that the accused had taken Agarwal to Lohagad Fort twice before and tried to kill him, but the plan failed on both occasions.
Ketan Agarwal and Siya Goyal were scheduled to get married in November at a palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan. However, police said Goyal did not want to marry him.
Speaking to reporters, Siya Goyal’s father demanded the strictest punishment for those responsible for the crime. He said Ketan was like a son to him and that both families had been preparing for the wedding.
He also denied allegations that Goyal’s family had hidden facts from Agarwal’s family. He said they had no information about any problem in the relationship or about his daughter’s alleged affair with another person.
Police said the investigation is continuing and further details will be verified through statements, digital evidence and other material collected during the probe.
