The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed authorities to monitor the health of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis as he continues his indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar.
The court also directed that medical aid be provided to Wangchuk whenever required.
A Bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia said life is precious and Wangchuk’s health condition should be regularly checked by government doctors.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and the Delhi Government, submitted that the life of every individual is precious.
He said there was no objection to carrying out Wangchuk’s regular medical check-up.
The court appreciated the stand taken by the Solicitor General.
It observed that the life of every citizen is precious and all efforts should be made by government authorities to protect it.
The Bench directed that Wangchuk’s medical condition be monitored every day and that necessary medical intervention be provided if required.
The order was passed on a public interest litigation that raised concern over Wangchuk’s health.
The Cockroach Janta Party has been holding a protest for more than 25 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
Wangchuk joined the agitation on June 28 and has been on an indefinite fast since then.
The court’s direction comes amid growing concern over his health as the protest continues at Jantar Mantar.
