A major rescue operation is under way in Ambala after a four-year-old boy fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell at Dhanaura village on Tuesday morning.

The child has been identified as Nirvair. According to officials, the incident took place around 7 am when the boy had gone with his family to agricultural fields and accidentally slipped into the borewell.

Soon after the incident, rescue teams reached the spot and started efforts to bring the child out safely. Teams of local police, the National Disaster Response Force, the State Disaster Response Force, and the Army have been deployed at the site.

Deputy Commissioner Ajay Tomer is monitoring the rescue operation. Heavy machinery has also been pressed into service to support the rescue teams.

Officials said a camera has been lowered into the borewell to monitor the child’s movement and condition.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, the boy slipped into the borewell while playing. He said the NDRF is using specialised equipment to rescue the child, while the Army has been deployed with heavy machinery.

The DC said if the initial rescue attempt does not succeed, teams will dig a parallel pit to reach the child. He added that the borewell is around 220 feet deep and nearly nine inches in diameter.

Persistent rain is creating difficulties for the rescue teams and slowing down the operation.

A large number of villagers have gathered near the site and are waiting anxiously for the child to be rescued. Some residents have expressed concern over the pace of the operation, saying that despite repeated efforts, the child has not yet been brought out.

The rescue operation is still continuing, and further updates are awaited.
