Indian Army athlete Naib Subedar Sarvesh Anil Kushare has created history by setting a new national record in high jump.

Kushare cleared 2.31 meters at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships being held in Bhubaneswar. With this jump, he became the first Indian athlete to cross the legendary 2.30-meter barrier in high jump.

He broke the previous national record of 2.29 meters, which was set by Tejaswin Shankar of New Delhi in 2018. Kushare’s performance also helped him qualify for the Asian Games.

The Indian Army congratulated the athlete on his achievement and said the “gold rush continues” as Army sportspersons continue to perform strongly in national and international events.

The Army also wished Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare success for upcoming major competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The Asian Games record in men’s high jump stands at 2.35 meters, set by Qatar’s Mutaz Barsham in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea. The Commonwealth Games record is 2.36 meters, set by Bermuda’s Clarence Saunders in 1990. The world record is 2.45 meters, set by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993 at Salamanca, Spain.

Kushare belongs to the Nashik district in Maharashtra. He joined the Indian Army in 2016 and is posted at the Artillery Centre in Bengaluru.

He made his international debut at the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal in December 2019, where he won the gold medal in men’s high jump. Since then, he has won several medals at national and international events.

Kushare is part of the Indian Army’s Mission Olympics program, under which selected sportspersons are trained at the Army Sports Institute in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India.

The Army Sports Institute was established in July 2001 to identify and train talented sportspersons from within the Armed Forces and recruit promising athletes from across the country.

Kushare’s record-breaking jump is being seen as a major milestone for Indian athletics and a proud moment for the Indian Army.
