New Delhi | Updated: July 2, 2026

The southwest monsoon arrived in Delhi on Thursday, five days later than its normal onset date of June 27.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon reached the national capital on July 2. IMD data shows that the last time monsoon arrived in Delhi on July 2 was in 2016 and 2017.

Last year, the southwest monsoon had reached Delhi on June 29.

Early on Thursday morning, IMD’s Safdarjung base station recorded 4.6 mm of rainfall, while Tukmirpur station recorded 20 mm of rain.

The maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 34.8 degrees Celsius.

On July 1, the Meteorological Department had forecast that conditions were favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan over the next two days.

The IMD also said that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal around July 3, 2026. Due to this, the monsoon is expected to remain active over central parts of the country for the next five to six days.

With the arrival of monsoon, Delhi residents are likely to get relief from humid weather, though waterlogging and traffic disruptions may occur in low-lying areas after rain.
