The Delhi High Court on Friday upheld the conviction of actor Rajpal Yadav in check-bounce cases and sentenced him to three months in jail.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma also directed Yadav to pay more than ₹1 crore to the complainant in each of the seven complaints.

The court clarified that around ₹2 crore already paid by the actor would be adjusted against the total amount.

The High Court also granted Yadav two months to approach the appellate court against the decision.

A detailed copy of the judgment is awaited.

The proceedings were related to revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court order.

The sessions court had upheld their conviction by a magisterial court in April 2018 in the check-bounce cases.

The magisterial court had earlier sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment.

In June 2024, the Delhi High Court had temporarily suspended Yadav’s conviction, subject to him taking sincere and genuine steps to explore the possibility of an amicable settlement with the complainant.

At that time, Yadav’s counsel had submitted that the transaction was genuine and was meant to finance the production of a film.

The counsel had said the film failed at the box office, causing major financial losses to the actor.

However, on February 2, the court directed Yadav to surrender on February 4, observing that he had repeatedly breached undertakings given to the court regarding repayment.

On February 16, the court temporarily suspended his sentence and allowed him to be released from jail after he deposited ₹1.5 crore in the bank account of a complainant.

The latest order has now upheld the actor’s conviction and imposed a three-month jail sentence in the check-bounce cases.
