A Panjab University research scholar died of electrocution during heavy rain at the university’s South Campus in Sector 25, Chandigarh, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Jyoti, a resident of Rewari in Haryana.

She was pursuing her PhD from the Department of Biotechnology at Panjab University.

According to sources, Jyoti was going from Girls’ Hostel No. 10 to her department when the incident took place.

Due to waterlogging in the area, she reportedly took an unpaved path to avoid the flooded stretch.

Within seconds, she allegedly came in contact with an electric current.

The current is suspected to have spread from an electric junction box near the spot.

Eyewitnesses said Jyoti fell on the ground after coming in contact with the current.

She was rushed to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Her family members have been informed about the incident.

Her brother and mother are on their way to Chandigarh.

Panjab University authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident has raised serious concerns over campus safety, waterlogging and electrical infrastructure during heavy rain.
