AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday criticised the Central Government over the rollout of E20 petrol, alleging that the country was being used as an “experiment lab”.

In a statement, Kejriwal claimed that ethanol-blended petrol was causing problems for vehicle owners, including reduced mileage and damage to vehicle parts.

“For the Modi government, the entire country has become an experiment lab. E20 petrol is being imposed on people. Ethanol is causing vehicles to break down, damaging parts, and reducing mileage. There is widespread anger among the public,” Kejriwal said.

The former Delhi Chief Minister said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urge him to review the E20 petrol policy.

Kejriwal also appealed to citizens to share their experiences and suggestions with him through direct messages and comments. He said public feedback would be included in his letter to the Prime Minister.

His remarks come amid growing debate over the Centre’s ethanol-blended fuel initiative. E20 petrol contains 20 per cent ethanol and 80 per cent petrol.

The Central Government has maintained that ethanol blending is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil, cutting emissions and supporting farmers by increasing demand for ethanol.

Government agencies have also said that vehicles designed or certified for E20 fuel are expected to operate safely with the blend.

However, critics have raised concerns over the impact of E20 petrol on older vehicles, especially those manufactured before March 2023. Some vehicle owners have reported a drop in fuel efficiency and concerns over possible long-term damage.

The E20 rollout has sparked public debate, with reports suggesting fuel efficiency could drop by around 2 per cent to 12 per cent in some vehicles. Consumer concerns have also led to calls for more clarity and choice at fuel stations.

Kejriwal’s statement is expected to add political momentum to the ongoing controversy over ethanol-blended petrol and its impact on vehicle owners.
