The government has ordered the removal of three Chinese apps allegedly being misused to remotely disable battery-operated vehicles in India, sources said on Friday.
The apps identified for removal are BAT-BMS, Lossigy, and Epoch-i-ion.
The action came after videos surfaced showing some e-rickshaws being rendered inoperable through a remote shutdown feature linked to the Chinese smartphone application BAT-BMS.
The videos triggered serious concerns over cybersecurity risks linked to internet-connected vehicle management systems, especially those used in electric rickshaws and other battery-operated vehicles.
Government sources said BAT-BMS, Lossigy, and Epoch-i-ion were allegedly being misused to remotely disable battery-operated vehicles.
Sources also warned that any other app found being misused in a similar manner would also be blocked.
Earlier in the day, IT Secretary S Krishnan, while speaking on the sidelines of a CII Cybersecurity Summit, said app stores must exercise due diligence before allowing such applications on their platforms.
He said the government would take up the matter with app stores to ensure that potentially harmful apps are not made available to users.
The move is being seen as part of a wider effort to strengthen cybersecurity in connected mobility systems and protect electric vehicle users from remote misuse of technology.
