Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his greetings to devotees as the Amarnath Yatra began, calling the pilgrimage a rare spiritual opportunity and an important symbol of India’s cultural unity.
In a letter shared on X, the Prime Minister said the Amarnath Yatra holds a special place in India’s spiritual tradition. He described the journey to the holy cave shrine of Baba Barfani as not just a physical pilgrimage, but a deeply spiritual experience marked by faith, discipline and devotion.
Modi said getting the opportunity to visit the holy shrine is a matter of divine grace and great fortune. He added that the Yatra reflects the courage, resilience and unwavering faith of devotees.
The Prime Minister also outlined his “Panch Sankalp” for pilgrims and urged them to follow these five resolutions during the Yatra.
Under the first resolution, Modi called upon devotees to maintain cleanliness throughout the pilgrimage route and avoid littering.
Second, he urged pilgrims to protect nature and the environment by conserving water and keeping rivers, mountains and surroundings clean.
Third, the Prime Minister appealed for a plastic-free Yatra and asked devotees to avoid single-use plastics during the pilgrimage.
Fourth, he encouraged pilgrims to support local communities by buying local products and promoting local livelihoods.
Fifth, Modi urged all devotees to strictly follow official rules and advisories related to safety, traffic, weather and administration to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage.
The Prime Minister said these resolutions would help make the Amarnath Yatra cleaner, safer and more meaningful.
He also appreciated the efforts of the administration, security forces, healthcare workers, volunteers and local residents involved in the smooth conduct of the Yatra.
Authorities have made extensive arrangements for the pilgrimage, including multi-layered security deployment, surveillance systems, healthcare facilities and weather-based movement protocols.
The 57-day Amarnath Yatra began on Friday and will continue till August 28.
