The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the Meghalaya High Court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in 2025.

A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Sheel Nagu expressed reservations over the High Court order but declined to stay it. The court noted that Sonam had already been released from jail and was staying in Shillong as per the bail conditions imposed by the trial court.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Meghalaya Government, argued that the allegations against Sonam were serious and that she should not be released on technical grounds.

Mehta sought a stay on the High Court order, but the Supreme Court refused to grant immediate relief.

The Bench has posted the matter for further hearing after the reopening of the apex court.

The Meghalaya government had moved the Supreme Court on Thursday, challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, who has been described as the prime accused in the case.

Sonam, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested in June last year in connection with the murder of her businessman husband Raja Raghuvanshi.

The couple had gone missing while vacationing in Meghalaya’s Sohra area on May 23, 2025. Raja’s body was later recovered from a deep gorge on June 2, 2025.

Police have alleged that Sonam conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband for financial gain.

On June 29, the Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi.

The case, widely referred to as the honeymoon murder case, continues to draw attention as the state government seeks cancellation of bail before the Supreme Court.
