High drama unfolded in Moga on Thursday after police stopped the convoy of Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu on his way to Moga Sadar Police Station.
Bittu was heading to the police station after a low-intensity blast took place inside the police station complex on Wednesday.
Police stopped his convoy midway, citing heightened security arrangements after the explosion.
Heavy barricades were placed on the Ludhiana-Moga road at the entrance of the city, blocking the route of the minister’s convoy.
A heavy police deployment restricted the movement of the convoy, leading to a tense standoff.
A heated exchange then took place between Bittu, his aides and DSP Jatinder Singh Gill, who was on duty at the spot.
After a prolonged discussion, the authorities removed the barricades and allowed the minister’s convoy to proceed towards the police station.
DSP Gill said the heavy deployment and movement restrictions were part of security measures put in place after the low-intensity blast at Moga Sadar Police Station.
According to official sources, unidentified bike-borne assailants allegedly hurled an explosive object at the police station complex on the Moga-Ferozepur Highway before fleeing.
The object is suspected to be a hand grenade.
Officials said the blast caused panic in the area, but no injuries or major property damage were reported.
Special forensic teams and anti-sabotage units have cordoned off the police station and started collecting evidence.
Investigators are also scanning CCTV footage from the highway to identify the suspects.
Bittu said he had visited Moga to express concern over the law and order situation in Punjab.
He alleged that gangsters and extortionists were ruling the roost in the state.
The Union Minister also said repeated attacks on police stations showed that the police were unable to ensure the security of even their own establishments.
